Jermaine Jenas believes that Mauricio Pochettino could decide to leave Tottenham Hotspur for Real Madrid.

The former Spurs midfielder who now works as a football pundit has suggested that if the Spanish giants lodge a ‘crazy’ offer it could prove to be too tempting to turn down.

Pochettino revealed in May that he has previously found it difficult to ignore interest from Los Blancos and described the opportunity as a ‘dream’ (Standard).

The Argentine hinted towards the end of last season that he could would consider leaving Tottenham in this summer, possibly by taking a sabbatical, if he did not believe in the chairman Daniel Levy’s plan for the next phase of the club’s development (Telegraph).

Thankfully, he is still at the helm after Spurs brought in Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Ryan Sessegnon and Jack Clarke as part of his aim to bolster his squad.

He told Express Sport: “If Mauricio gets a crazy job offer – for example, if Real Madrid came in for him, which is quite possible – who turns down Real Madrid?

“If he went there and won trophies, he would be just like a lot of other Real Madrid managers.

“But if he could win something big at Tottenham, it would be very special after the amount of time and effort he’s put into building the team.

“If he is going to leave, he deserves to go with a winner’s medal in his pocket, but the fact is Tottenham last won a trophy in 2008 – and I can remember it because I was playing.

“What I do know, from speaking to the players, is that they are desperate to break the drought.

“But trophies are not easy to come by when Manchester City and Liverpool are as strong as they are in every competition.

“And I know they are desperate to get that first piece of silverware, and get that monkey off their back.”

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Any manager in their right mind would turn down Real Madrid! That’s who.
Why would any top coach or manager go to a club that does not allow for projects
or rebuilding or making a team in the coach’s image, or the way the coach wants to play??
Real Madrid is a bloody madhouse, with coaches/managers coming and going every year almost,
whether trophies have been won or not.
Can you remember all of the past RM coaches from the last 15 years? Er ..apart from Zidane, who doesn’t
really want to be there second time around, there was Benitez (ex Newcastle and now China),
Pellegrini (West Ham), Mourinho (nowhere and can’t get a decent position), Ancelotti (Napoli),
Ramos (prior Spurs ‘failure’), Capello (who’s been everywhere since and mostly failing), and around
8 other names that you wouldn’t know if someone said them out loud.
Real Madrid coaches are simply ‘caretakers’. No one really cares about them, the fans and the owners just care about
the team. You could win the CL at Madrid and be gone as a coach 6 months later. Pochettino would be nuts to leave a project that gives him pretty much hands on to build and develop players and teams. He could win 6 trophies at RM and be forgotten a year later. Win 2 or 3 trophies at Spurs, they’ll build a statue of him outside the new stadium.
Look, I can understand players wanting to play for RM. But I can’t understand coaches wanting to try (if they were even allowed) to drill and coach a bunch of prima donnas into the type of team he (the coach) wants. Hence the reason there’s been 15 coaches at Real since 2004! Poch would regret his time at RM even if they won trophies galore ..because Poch won’t be feted or remembered for it.
