Journalist claims it ‘wouldn’t be received well’ by Spurs fans if Levy chose this manager

The Daily Express reporter Dean Jones has suggested that even though Brendan Rodgers would be a decent appointment for Tottenham, hiring the 50-year-old would not go down well with Spurs fans.

If some reports over the last few days are to be believed, Rodgers has emerged as a shock contender to replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham after his exit from Leicester City.

Football Insider reported earlier this week that Daniel Levy has been a long-time admirer of the Northern Irishman, having first approached him to replace Harry Redknapp back in 2012.

The report suggested that the Spurs chairman is now set to make an approach for Rodgers again 11 years later.

Paul Merson opined a couple of days ago that a move for the departed Leicester boss would make total sense for Tottenham, insisting that he will get the Lilywhites playing attractive football again (Sportskeeda).

However, Jones believes that a move for Rodgers would not be well received, given how far his stock has fallen over the last year and a half.

When asked if Levy could make a move for the 50-year-old, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “It wouldn’t surprise you, but I think Brendan’s stock has fallen so drastically in the past 18 months and I think that would be an appointment that wouldn’t be received well at Tottenham, even though it probably would have been a decent move.

“It wasn’t long ago when he was at Leicester and flying, back-to-back fifth finishes and an FA Cup; because of that, the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle we’re looking at him.

“It’s crazy how football changes; it’s such a fickle sport because, suddenly, nobody’s interested in Brendan Rodgers.”

While Rodgers is a decent manager, his managerial career is clearly on a downward trajectory at the moment.

The 50-year-old is also not the guy to turn to if Spurs want possession-based, attacking football as he has become quite a bit more pragmatic over the last few years.
