Journalist confirms why Alderweireld and Aurier miss out against Southampton

Many Tottenham Hotspur fans were left bewildered following Mauricio Pochettino’s team selection for the Premier League match against Southampton.

Toby Alderweireld was left completely out of the squad for the trip to St Mary’s despite playing the full 90 minutes during the 1-0 win against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night.

Spurs are not in action for three weeks following today’s match which has left supporters baffled as to why he would not be included.

Football journalist Alasdair Gold has confirmed that both Alderweireld and Serge Aurier miss out after Pochettino decided to rest the pair and neither are injured.

Elsewhere there was a return to the side for Dele Alli after the midfielder has recovered from a hamstring injury and there was also a first start in 2019 for Eric Dier.

Southampton have won three of their seven Premier League home games under manager Ralph Hasenhüttl (D1 L3), as many as they had in their previous 24 combined at St Mary’s under Mauricio Pellegrino and Mark Hughes (W3 D11 L10).
