‘Makes Aurier look like Cafu’ – Some Spurs fans react to rumoured defensive target’s performance

Some Spurs fans on social media are horrified by the prospect of the Lilywhites being linked with a move for Nelson Semedo this summer on the back of his performance in the 8-2 thrashing by Bayern Munich on Friday night.

Semedo is reportedly one of the options Jose Mourinho’s men are considering as they seek an upgrade at right-back ahead of next season (Don Balon).

The Portuguese international certainly did not have an easy job on his hands on Friday as he came up against Ivan Perisic and Alphonso Davies, who tore him to shreds down the Bayern left.

To rub salt into the Catalans’ wounds, Barca loanee Philippe Coutinho also exposed the right-back on multiple occasions when he scored twice after coming on late in the game.

Most of Bayern’s goals came down their left side, with Semedo’s forward runs leaving the Barca defence repeatedly exposed throughout the game.

After watching some of the 26-year-old’s defending during the Champions League quarter final, some Spurs fans do not believe that the Barcelona man will be an upgrade over Serge Aurier.

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no question that Semedo can be a defensive liability on occasions and Bayern certainly exposed him on Friday. However, Quique Setien’s system certainly did not do the 26-year-old any favours at all as all of Barca’s width needed to come from their full-backs, which was always going to leave them exposed to quick transitions and counters.

The rumours linking us with Semedo have died down over recent weeks as the Castagne and Celik reports have picked up. Looking at the profile of both the Lille and the Atalanta man, it is clear that Mourinho wants to bring in a defensively competent right-back, who is also a good crosser/passer of the ball.
