‘Makes things easier’ – Pundit suggests Steve Hitchen’s exit could benefit Spurs

Noel Whelan has suggested that Steve Hitchen’s decision to resign from his role as Tottenham’s technical performance director could be of benefit since there are now ‘fewer voices’ making the big decisions at the club.

Hitchen’s most-recent five-year spell at Tottenham came to an end last week when he announced his resignation.

According to The Athletic, the 45-year-old lost most of his power when it comes to the club’s managerial appointments and transfer targets when Fabio Paratici was appointed as Tottenham’s managing director of football in the summer.

The report added that Paratici was good friends with Hitchen and was disappointed at the news of his resignation.

Antonio Conte admitted that he too had a good relationship with Hitchen and thanked him for the work he did during his time at the club (Football London).

Whelan believes that Hitchen’s departure from Spurs was inevitable with the changing of the guards following the arrival of Paratici and Conte.

The former Leeds forward told Football Insider about Hitchen’s departure: “Honestly, this is football, isn’t it? There are always going to be changes.

“New managers, people coming into different roles. I think sometimes fewer voices makes things easier. That’s probably the case here.

“Steve Hitchen’s had a long time at the club but during that time there have been some bad signings. It hasn’t always gone swimmingly at Tottenham. We’ve always expected more from them.

“I think now, when you’ve got a strong manager in Antonio Conte, Paratici coming in as well, there are going to be changes. It’s as simple as that. It’s unfortunate, but no one’s job in football is safe.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Hitchen has got a lot of unfair criticism from sections of the Spurs fan base, even though we as fans have no idea about the internal workings at the club.

It is not clear if the 45-year-old is to blame for some of the club’s poor recruitment decisions over recent years.

What is clear is that Hitchen is a passionate man and someone who knows the club intimately. So, he will likely be missed by the staff.
