Mauricio Pochettino on whether Vincent Janssen will play against Newcastle

Mauricio Pochettino has ruled out the prospect of Vincent Janssen being named in the Tottenham Hotspur squad for tomorrow’s match against Newcastle United.

The Spurs boss revealed at a press conference at Hotspur Way earlier today that the 24-year-old will be involved with the first team once again.

Janssen was not given a squad number going into the new campaign and after recovering from a foot operation has been playing with Tottenham’s development side to work on his fitness.

With Harry Kane and Dele Alli ruled out through injury until the start of next month, the goalscoring burden has been placed on Fernando Llorente and Heung-min Son.

Pochettino believes that the former AZ Alkmaar man needs to train with the first team and familiarise himself once more with the players before he returns to top flight action.

The striker was tipped to leave the club before the transfer window closed yesterday, but has remained at the club when a move away from North London was not possible.

Pochettino told Football.London when he was asked if Janssen could feature tomorrow: “No, he needs to train to be involved We need to communicate with team mates and captains and we had a conversation this morning and tell him he will be involved in the first team.

“Before it was clear because he wanted to leave and the plan was our plan, but now when you cannot achieve what you want it’s important that he feels again that he can be healthy for the club and try to get him fit to help us.”
