‘My heart opens’ – Pundit loves watching Spurs star who has ‘elegance’ and ‘personality’

Former Italy goalkeeper Giovanni Galli has admitted that he is a big fan of Guglielmo Vicario, adding that he was delighted to see the Tottenham man finally win his first cap for Italy during the international break.

Vicario has been in and around the Italy squad for a long time but had to wait patiently for his opportunity, with Gianluigi Donnarumma being ahead of him in the pecking order.

That opportunity finally came last week as the 27-year-old won his first cap for the Azzurri in their 2-0 win over Ecuador at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

Many Spurs fans will feel that the cap was well deserved and a long time coming for Vicario, who has been nearly flawless between the sticks since arriving at North London last summer and impressed one and all with his shot-stopping ability.

Guglielmo Vicario is a joy to watch

In fact, Italian journalist Lapo De Carlo even suggested a couple of days ago that the former Emploi man should be Luciano Spalletti’s number one, opining that he is better than Donnarumma (TV Play via Tutto Cagliari).

While Galli has now acknowledged that the PSG star is an excellent goalkeeper, he admitted that he is over the moon that Vicario was finally handed a chance.

The former Milan number one told TuttoMercatoWeb: “I’m happy, I recognise that Donnarumma is a great goalkeeper. But when I see the elegance, the personality, the figure of Vicario, my heart opens.

“Donnarumma is imposing and doesn’t let you see the goal behind, Vicario, on the other hand, is a really good figure, he pleases the eye, he’s elegant. I’m happy for him.

“If Donnarumma had a highway in front of him, Vicario arrived in Serie A and in blue [Italy] by doing the Via Crucis. He suffered so much and he deserved the call-up and debut in the national team.”

While Vicario is by no means a worse goalkeeper than Donnarumma, the PSG star is likely going to remain Italy’s number one for the foreseeable future. However, should he have a downturn in form or make a few mistakes, the Tottenham man is ready and waiting to take his place.
