Opinion: This midfield enforcer is the perfect signing for Spurs this summer

It is well known that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is likely to cause Tottenham to take a huge financial hit, reported to be in the region of £200 million.

This will likely force the to have to spend smartly as they look to reinforce their squad on a limited budget, with free transfers, loans, and part-exchanges all predicted.

In my opinion, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is the perfect example of what would be a ‘smart signing’. He has impressed for Southampton under Ralph Hassenhuttl in midfield for a number of seasons and fills the biggest gap in the Tottenham team at defensive midfield.

As the player has only one year left on his contract and has reportedly made his desire to join the Lilywhites clear, he could be available for a reduced fee reportedly in the region of £25m (Sky Sports).

Hojbjerg would provide some much-needed stability in front of the back four and is probably the best player in his position that the club can afford this summer, given the need to strengthen in other areas such full-backs and striker.

Playing Hojbjerg as a defensive midfielder would also give Jose Mourinho the option to play exciting midfielders Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele together in a more adventurous midfield.

Jose has been hesitant to play the two together and has often opted for the more defence-minded options in Winks and Sissoko alongside Lo Celso.

Having a proper defensive midfielder would hopefully free Ndombele to operate in a more attacking role, which could finally unlock the potential he has shown glimpses of this season.

At only 24-years-old Hojbjerg has plenty of resale value, Premier League experience, talent, and room to improve, making it a deal that is simply too good for Spurs to turn down.
