Paul Merson describes the impact a Christian Eriksen exit would have on Spurs

Former Premier League midfielder Paul Merson believes that Tottenham Hotspur could be at risk of losing three of their key players.

Merson who now works as a football pundit for Sky Sports has claimed that it would be a massive loss if Christian Eriksen was to leave the club.

The Dane is out of contract at Tottenham in 18 months time and has been heavily linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid (Standard).

The 26-year-old is attracting interest from Madrid, who are looking for a long-term replacement for Luka Modric.

Tottenham have a few key players who are in precarious positions in relation to their contracts expiring.

Left-back Danny Rose has shown glimpses of his best form once again this season and put in another impressive shift in the Carabao Cup win against Chelsea on Tuesday. Rose’s current deal expires in 2021.

More of a concern is Toby Alderweireld’s contract which expires in 2020, but contains a £25million release clause which runs from the start of this summer’s transfer window.

Fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen’s contract also expires in 2020.

Merson told Sky Sports: “You got to weigh it all up. Spurs have almost moved into their new stadium but Christian Eriksen looks like he could be on his way, that would be a massive loss. Danny Rose has not signed a contract, it would be a loss if he goes. And then there’s Toby Alderweireld, who has signed an extension but that only means his transfer fee is worth more.
