Paul Merson on who will win between Southampton and Spurs

Sky Sports football pundit Paul Merson has shared his thoughts on the outcome of the Premier League match between Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham have lost their last two away league games at the hands of Burnley and Chelsea, the same number they’d lost in their previous 13 on the road (W11 D0 L2). They’ve only lost three in a row on the road under Mauricio Pochettino once before (November 2017).

The match will see Pochettino return to his former club but will have to watch the match from the director’s box following his two-match touchline ban from the FA.

With Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United all trying to catch Tottenham in third place, nothing less than three points will do if the club are to tighten their grip on a top four finish.

Merson has predicted that Spurs will end their three match run without a win in the top flight, with a comfortable win against the Saints.

He told Sky Sports: “Tottenham had a great result in midweek in the Champions League and I thought they were fortunate against Arsenal. Southampton are a funny team – they go to Old Trafford and should have got a point and did well. If Cardiff end up beating West Ham and go above Southampton, they’ve then got some hard games coming up. Cardiff need to go above Southampton to make them panic but if they are always in front of them, it is just another hard game gone by, but I think Southampton will stay up.

“Prediction: 1-3”.
