Tottenham’s superstar had a very good game given the circumstances but it was very frustrating to watch him drop deep in possession knowing how deadly he is in front of the goal. He showed his qualities with a great cut back to send Semedo back to Benfica, and a great shot to put Spurs back in the game. He delivered some quality passes from the 10 position but everyone knows that’s not where the team needs him.

Hugo Lloris’ nightmare mistake after less than two minutes gave Tottenham Hotspur an uphill task in their Champions League clash against Barcelona.

The keeper did not exactly cover himself in glory upon his return to the side, opting to come charging out of his goal even though Barcelona’s Alba was always favourite to get there first. Alba squared the ball to Coutinho who took one touch and slotted home from 20 yards.

A textbook volley by Rakitic made it two-nil going into the half time break, but Spurs did show an improvement in the second half.

Spurs pulled one back through Harry Kane, who dragged the ball back in the area before curling into the bottom corner. In typical style Lionel Messi hit back almost instantly.

Erik Lamela gave Spurs a lifeline with a deflected shot to make it 2-3, but it was Man of the Match Messi who had the final say by adding his second and Barcelona’s fourth on 89 minutes to condemn Tottenham to s second successive Champions League defeat.
