Pochettino answers whether Spurs can win the Champions League

Tottenham Hotspur face Borussia Dortmund this evening in the second leg of the round of sixteen and already have one foot in the next round of the Champions League.

Spurs carry a hefty three goal advantage from the first leg after a comprehensive 3-0 win at Wembley courtesy of second half goals from Heung-min Son, Jan Vertonghen and Fernando Llorente.

With Dortmund failing to register an away goal, Spurs are in the box seat to book their place in the last eight of the competition.

Mauricio Pochettino was asked at yesterday’s pre-match press conference whether his side are capable of going all the way and winning the Champions League.

The Spurs boss distanced himself from committing to an answer and instead highlighted that the match against Dortmund is the priority and should they progress, the draw can also have an element of luck to guide a side to the final.

Instead, he referenced that the Premier League is the most competition to him.

When asked if Spurs can win the Champions League, he told Football.London: “Step by step. The most important thing is tomorrow. In competitions like the Champions League or Europa League or domestic cups in England, Carabao or FA Cup, you need not only to win games you need to be more than lucky sometimes to arrive to play the final. The draw is so important, many circumstances involved. Sometimes you can arrive to play a final and maybe win it and you are not the best team in Europe or in England.

“Always for me the most important is the league, like the Premier League, Bundesliga or La Liga the most consistent team always wins. The best team always beats the other 19 opponents. In the cups many circumstances can happen. The belief of course is that we can beat any team but now I think we need tomorrow to show, a do a very good job, be professional, be aggressive, try to forget the first leg and be focused on this game and try to be better than Borussia Dortmund. But of course our ambition and in our mind we are always positive and we trust in ourselves, you can beat any team if you are focused. If not, look we can lose against Burnley and then Burnley after us lose against Newcastle and Palace. Look how football is. The most important thing is the approach for tomorrow, be focused, concentrate and give your best.”
