Pochettino chose loyalty over dream job

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino rejected the chance to become Real Madrid’s next manager because he did not want to be seen as a mercenary.

The Argentine signed a new five-year contract with Tottenham along with the rest of his first-team backroom staff at the end of May and did not want to be seen as turning his back on Daniel Levy and the club after putting pen to paper.

The Mail report that Pochettino was formally offered the opportunity to take over at Real Madrid following Zinedine Zidane’s resignation after leading the club to their third successive Champions League title. However, despite the prospect of returning to Spain where he had previously played for Espanyol, Poch has showed loyalty to Spurs.

By doing so, the Spurs manager is said to have held talks with some of his star players including Christian Eriksen, Harry Kane and Dele Alli who are all likely to be offered improved terms to remain at the club.

Madrid also know how tough it would have been to agree a deal with Levy following his tough negotiations over the transfers of Luka Modric and Gareth Bale. Thankfully, Poch is going nowhere.
