Pundit argues Man Utd should sign another PL striker instead of Harry Kane

In an appearance on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, former Swansea and Everton defender Ashley Williams has claimed he would rather sign Ivan Toney than Harry Kane if he was in charge at Manchester United.

Kane has been on fire for Tottenham of late and has 19 goals to his name this season so far (Transfermarkt). He recently bagged his 267th Spurs goal (Transfermarkt) to become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer (GOAL).

In comparison, Toney has been instrumental in helping to establish Brentford as a Premier League side since their promotion in 2021 and he now has 26 top-flight goals to his name (Transfermarkt).

Both players are crucial to their individual teams, and both players’ futures are also up for debate, too. Kane has just under 18 months left on his current contract with Spurs and it is thought Manchester United are keen on signing the 29-year-old in the summer (Sky Sports).

United have also been linked with Toney (Mirror), and given the opportunity, Williams believes Toney would be a better signing for the Red Devils.

He said: “Honesty, I don’t think he is a better player, but I would take Toney. I don’t think he is a better player than Harry Kane, but it takes a certain system to get the best out of Harry Kane. I don’t think Harry Kane can go and play for any team and do what he does.”

Williams believes Toney offers something Kane cannot, adding: “I don’t think [Kane] is as mobile as he once was. He is good, he is going to score goals, but if I am signing someone, I am going to take Toney.”

I hope Manchester United share this sentiment because I would much rather not lose Harry Kane. He is a far better all-round player than Toney, but, if we were to lose Kane, Toney would be my top pick to replace him at Spurs.
