Pundit suggests area of concern after Spurs manager rumour

Noel Whelan has claimed that the fact Ernesto Valverde has been out of work for 18 months might worry Spurs fans amidst rumours that the North London club have approached the former Barcelona boss.

It remains to be seen who Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici will approach next after calling off talks with both Gennaro Gattuso and Paulo Fonseca last week.

Some sources have suggested that Tottenham could turn to former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo or Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag.

Valverde is another coach who has been mooted as a candidate for Spurs, with Fabrizio Romano revealing on Saturday that Spurs have approached the Spaniard, although he added that talks were not advanced.

Whelan insisted that the 57-year-old would be a preferable appointment to many of the other names being linked with Spurs but added that the only concern would be Valverde’s extended hiatus from the game.

The former Leeds striker told Football Insider: “You question why he (Valverde) has been out of work for so long.

“Usually managers are not out of work for longer than a few months. 18 months is a long time for a manager to be away from the game.

“But Valverde would be a big step up from what Spurs have been looking at recently though, the likes of Fonseca and Gattuso.”

“I’m not licking my lips at the thought though and that will likely be the case with a lot of Tottenham fans. I imagine a lot of them would be scratching their heads a bit and thinking, ‘What? Why?’

“It is a very strange situation at Spurs right now. How can it take this long to appoint a manager? Why are all of the talks breaking down?”

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that Valverde has been out of work for so long could certainly be an indicator of the fact that the Spaniard is not really in demand among the top clubs in Europe. I would rather see the job go to a young coach with fresh ideas like Potter even though he is inexperienced.
