Pundit thinks Aston Villa will beat Tottenham to a top four spot this season

Tony Cascarino has backed Aston Villa to finish in the top four over Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Until a little over a week ago, some pundits were genuinely asking whether Spurs could mount a title challenge this season as Ange Postecoglou’s men almost had an air of invincibility about them, having won 8 and drawn two of their first ten Premier League games.

However, Tottenham’s weaknesses have been laid bare in their two back-to-back defeats against Chelsea and Wolves.

The injuries and suspensions to key players undoubtedly played a big part in the 2-1 defeat at the Molineux Stadium, with the Lilywhites’ lack of squad depth being exposed.

Tottenham will now face what looks set to be a six-pointer against Aston Villa after the international break, with Unai Emery’s men sitting just a point behind the Lilywhites.

Who will finish in the PL top four this season?

Cascarino has now suggested that the Villans are better equipped to qualify for the Champions League than Tottenham are.

When asked if he expects the current top four to remain as it is at the end of the season, the pundit said on The Game Podcast, “No. I think Villa will [finish in the top four]. They’re a side that have got so much even though they’ve had days where I think ‘really?’

“Seeing them at Forest last week was really bizarre because Forest just ran them up and caused Villa so many problems. But I do believe that home record and a slight improvement on their away performances, I think Villa will be up there.

“Instead of Tottenham. I’d definitely go with Tottenham being the ones to miss out. There’s a lot to be excited about [for Villa].”

Spurs Web Opinion

I always believed that Chelsea would be our main competitor for a top-four spot as it was going to be only a matter of time before Mauricio Pochettino settled on the right combination.

There are now already signs that the Argentine has done that and is starting to get a tune out of the players at Stamford Bridge.
