Rafael van der Vaart responds to Tweet by Tottenham Hotspur

It’s hard to believe that it was eight years ago today that Tottenham Hotspur signed Rafael van der Vaart from Real Madrid.

The signing of VDV has to be up there with one of the best bits of business we have done in the transfer window since its inception, especially when you consider that we only paid £8million for him.

The midfield maestro scored 28 goals in 77 games during his two-year spell in north London before joining Hamburg in 2012 after not fitting in the plans of Andre Villas-Boas who instead put his faith into Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Rafa admitted in later years when asked about his exit from White Hart Lane that “It was a stupid decision, the most stupid in my career to leave Tottenham. I absolutely regret it because it was the best two years in my football life.”

However, we can all look back fondly on VDV’s time in a Spurs shirt. Memories spring to mind of his goals against the scum and the absolute footballing lesson he handed to Jack Wilshere.

After the club posted a reminder on Twitter to mark the anniversary arrival at the club, the Dutchman was quick to reply with a fitting compliment.
