Record-breaking Spurs teenager shortlisted for award

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Alfie Devine is among the candidates for September’s Premier League 2 Player of the Month award.

Devine has been in impressive form for Tottenham’s Under-23 side in the past month having netted twice against his former club after the North Londoners came back from a goal down to beat Liverpool 2-1.

He also bagged a goal in a 3-1 win against Derby Country two weeks later and caught the eye in a 3-3 draw at Blackburn Rovers.

The 17-year-old is up against Folarin Balogun (Arsenal), Sam Burns (Blackburn Rovers), Caleb Chukwuemeka (Aston Villa), Baba Fernandes (Nottingham Forest), Joe Gelhardt (Leeds United) and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi (Crystal Palace) in scooping the award.

Devine is yet to make a first-team appearance this season since Nuno Espirito Santo took charge of the club, having previously etched his name in the club’s record books having become Tottenham’s youngest ever goalscorer on his debut under Jose Mourinho in a FA Cup third round tie against Marine in January, aged just 16 years and 163 days.

Devine is one of the club’s brightest prospects and it would have been good to have seen Nuno utilise him in Europa Conference League fixtures in the same manner as he has done for Dane Scarlett.

A loan deal in January could be of benefit for the teenager, rather than playing Under-23 football given the ability he possesses at such a young age.
