Report: Daniel Levy was the driving force behind one Spurs deal last summer

The Athletic have revealed that it was Daniel Levy and not Fabio Paratici who did most of the leg work in the negotiations with Everton for Richarlison last summer.

Tottenham agreed on a deal of £60m including add-ons with Everton for Richarlison and the move was seen as a statement of ambition by the North Londoners, particularly given the attacking talent already at the club.

The 25-year-old’s first season at Spurs has not gone as he would have hoped, with the forward yet to find the back of the net for the Lilywhites in the Premier League in what has been a campaign interrupted by multiple injuries.

While looking into why the move has not worked so far and what Richarlison has to do to succeed at Spurs, The Athletic also shed light on why he was signed.

The report adds that Antonio Conte was keen to have top-quality alternatives on the bench in order to help Spurs transition into a team with a ‘big-club mentality’.

It is explained that Levy ‘did a lot of the running’ for the deal, with the Tottenham chairman said to have recognised before any other Premier League club that Everton would have to sell some of their assets due to the financial peril they found themselves in last summer.

Richarlison has been quite unlucky with the timing of his injuries this season and has struggled to get a run of matches in the starting eleven.

When he has been handed opportunities, it has mostly been on the right, where is not as effective as he is on the left or through the middle.
