Report: ‘Eyebrows were raised’ in high-level football circles at recent Spurs decision

The Athletic have revealed that Daniel Levy’s decision to hire Scott Munn left many in the industry surprised, given the newcomer’s lack of experience in European football.

Tottenham confirmed last week that Munn has been appointed as the new chief football officer, a role which means he will head all footballing operations at the club.

Munn worked for nine years with A-League side Melbourne City FC as their chief executive officer before taking over the same role at City Football Group in China back in 2019.

However, the role of Spurs will be the Australian’s first post in European football.

The Athletic reveal that ‘eyebrows were raised’ in some ‘high-level football circles’ last Friday when Spurs confirmed the appointment, given the scale of the job facing him in his first adventure in Europe.

However, the publication adds that when they spoke to those who have worked with Munn, they were ‘very complimentary’ of the new Tottenham chief footballing officer and believed he can make the necessary step up.

Munn’s role is bigger than just the director of football and one can argue that broad roles like that can translate across different footballing cultures better than a role of a head coach or managing director can.

The Australian is experienced in building football clubs from the ground up. I do not think not having worked at a European club would be too much of a problem.
