Report: Liverpool give Tottenham free run at summer transfer target

According to German news outlet Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung , Liverpool have decided to pull out of the race to sign Micky van de Ven, leaving the path clear for Tottenham Hotspur to look to sign the central defender.

It has been widely reported over recent days that Tottenham are at the front of the queue with their interest in Wolfsberg’s van de Ven.

Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claimed earlier this week that Spurs’ talks with Wolfsburg for the Dutch Under-21 international are ‘advancing’ and that an agreement between the two clubs is now ‘close’.

Liverpool end interest in Micky van de Ven

It was suggested last month that Tottenham were facing competition from Liverpool for van de Ven, with the Reds also at the time said to have been ‘weighing up’ an offer for the young defender(Daily Mail).

However, WAZ have now handed Spurs a boost in their pursuit of the centre-back by stating that Jurgen Klopp’s men are no longer looking to sign the player in the current transfer window.

It is said that Klopp held a meeting with Liverpool’s new director of football Jorg Schmadtke recently, on the back of which the Merseyside club decided to ‘cool’ their interest in the 22-year-old.

The Anfield outfit will now no longer look to sign Van de Ven despite weeks of interest in the Bundesliga stopper.

Van de Ven began his senior career in the Dutch second tier with FC Volendam, before making the switch to the Volkswagen Arena in the summer of 2021.

It appears as if Tottenham are unopposed in their pursuit of Van de Ven and the North London club can finalise the deal if they wish to do. I suspect they are waiting to see if there is any progress on the Edmond Tapsoba deal before pushing ahead with a move for the Dutchman.

Spurs conceded 63 goals in 38 Premier League matches season, with only five other sides in the division allowing more goals past them, and this is something that urgently needs to be addressed.

While the club have been active in the transfer market, one criticism is the fact a new central defender has not been signed in time for the start of the pre-season tour.
