Report: Newcastle look to rival Tottenham for central defender

Chilean news outlet CDF are reporting that Newcastle United have joined Tottenham Hotspur with an interest in Monaco’s Guillermo Maripan.

Steve Bruce’s side are said to have “equalled” Spurs’ interest and are keen land the central defender ahead of their Premier League rivals.

The report claims that the Monaco defender is available for a fee in the region of €20 million (£18m) this summer, with the Ligue 1 side experiencing financial issues.

Tottenham lost the services of Jan Vertonghen last month when the Belgian departed North London after eight years at the club following the expiration of his contract and Jose Mourinho’s side are yet to bring in a replacement.

Maripan has previously admitted that he wants a move to the Premier League and was ‘aiming’ to earn a move to England (Al Aire Libre).

The 26-year-old made his name with Alaves, starring for the La Liga outfit before heading to Monaco last summer.
