Report: Newcastle unlikely to be able to afford Spurs-linked star in January

A report from The Athletic claims Newcastle United would be unable to afford James Maddison, offering Tottenham and Chelsea fresh hopes of securing his signature.

The upward trajectory of Maddison’s career is something to behold, having worked his way up from Coventry City, to Norwich City, before joining Leicester City in the summer of 2018. He has 52 goals and 36 assists in 185 appearances for the Foxes (Transfermarkt).

Maddison enjoyed a particularly fruitful campaign last year, registering 18 goals and 12 assists across 53 appearances in all competitions for Leicester (Transfermarkt).

The 26-year-old has picked up where he left off this term, too, with seven goals and four assists to his name already in the first half of the season (Transfermarkt). That form saw Maddison make Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the 2022 World Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur have been interested in signing the playmaker for a long time (Football.London), but they are not the only club to be courting Maddison. Newcastle United are believed to be targeting a move for the player (Northern Echo), while Chelsea are also interested (Ben Jacobs GiveMeSport).

It has been rumoured that Maddison is keen on a move, but may look to wait until the summer to decide on his next destination so that he can select a club competing in the Champions League (GiveMeSport).

Finishing in the top four may not be the only challenge for Newcastle in their pursuit of Maddison, though. According to the report from The Athletic, it has been suggested that Leicester’s ‘asking price means a mid-season deal is probably unworkable’ for Newcastle’s owners at this time.

Spurs Web Opinion

I really would love to see James Maddison come to Spurs. He feels like the perfect fit for our club and would offer something different to what we currently have in the squad right now. Let’s just hope we finish in the top four and can be an attractive proposition for him in the summer.
