Report: Postecoglou may have to get rid of as many as 17 Spurs players this summer

The Times have pointed out that Ange Postecoglou will have to oversee a substantial clear-out at Tottenham this summer, given the extremely bloated nature of the squad.

Over the last three transfer windows under Antonio Conte, Tottenham signed a whole host of players, with Rodrigo Bentancur, Dejan Kulusevski, Cristian Romero (made permanent), Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic, Clement Lenglet (on loan), Richarlison, Djed Spence, Destiny Udogie, and Pedro Porro, all arriving through the door.

Tottenham have sanctioned the aforementioned 13 signings despite the fact that they have not been able to find buyers for the likes of Joe Rodon, Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele and Sergio Reguilon.

The Times point out that as a result, Spurs have a net spend of £332m in total over the past five seasons and have a whopping 33 senior players in their squad at present.

They suggest that this could particularly be an issue next season, given that the Lilywhites have not qualified for Europe, which means that they would only be playing a maximum of 50 matches even if they get to the final of the League Cup and the FA Cup.

As a result, they state that Postecoglou might have to get rid of more than 17 players this summer to have a manageable squad and make room for new signings.

The bloated size of the squad and its imbalanced nature (with a whole host of wing-backs but lacking even one attacking midfielder) shows that Tottenham actually went overboard in backing Conte’s vision, only for the Italian to flop and leave a complete mess.

The irony with the whole situation is that some Spurs fans accuse the club of not backing the Italian and absolve him of any blame when it is clear that he got his way, which is why he hardly complained about the club’s transfer business, which he did quite regularly at all of his previous clubs.
