Report provides update on Tanguy Ndombele and Napoli’s option to buy Spurs midfielder

Area Napoli report that Tanguy Ndombele is expected to return to Tottenham in the summer as Napoli do not plan on taking up the option to sign the Frenchman permanently.

Tottenham have made several expensive mistakes in the transfer market over the last few years, none more costly than their acquisition of Ndombele.

The Lilywhites paid £63m to snap up the midfielder from Lyon back in 2019 but he has struggled to hit the expected heights at Tottenham under different managers.

The 26-year-old failed to win over Antonio Conte, with Napoli signing him on loan last summer with an option to make the deal permanent for £30m (Football Insider).

While Ndombele has shown some glimpses of his quality for Luciano Spelleti’s men this season, he has struggled to nail down a place in the starting eleven.

Area Napoli now assert that the Serie A club ‘will almost certainly’ not take up the option to sign the midfielder permanently, and he is thus ‘destined to return to Tottenham’.

The report states that while Ndombele has put in some ‘positive performances’, he has not shown the consistency Napoli were hoping for and the club thus consider the cost of the operation to be ‘too high’.

If Napoli consider the cost of the operation too high, perhaps, they will look to negotiate down the price.

Even Spelleti’s men show no interest, Spurs would be hoping that Ndombele has done enough at Naples this season to perhaps attract interest from other clubs.

The other scenario (although far more unlikely) is Pochettino potentially returning to Tottenham in the summer and offering the Frenchman an opportunity to salvage his career in North London.
