Report: Sources claim Tottenham’s move for midfielder has ‘collapsed’

Tottenham Hotspur may have to give up on their pursuit of Conor Gallagher this month, as it seems Chelsea are adamant they want to keep the midfielder for the rest of the season.

With two new signings already through the door this month in Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin, Tottenham are thought to be looking at bringing in a central midfielder, specifically a number 8, before the window shuts (The Independent).

It has long been suggested the Conor Gallagher would be Spurs‘ top priority for that role. Despite the rivalry between the Lilywhites and Chelsea, there is also thought to be scope for a deal to be achieved, with the Blues open to selling the player if the right fee is offered (Ben Jacobs).

According to Ben Jacobs, Spurs are willing to bid around £35m, but Chelsea are looking for closer to the £60m they received for Mason Mount last summer.

Spurs may have to wait for Conor Gallagher

However, it has already been suggested that Spurs may have to put off their interest until the end of the season, with a move unlikely in the winter window (The Sun). Now, the latest from sources at Football Insider corroborates this idea.

The new report claims the negotiations for Gallagher have “collapsed” at present, as Chelsea are keen to keep the 23-year-old for the “remainder of the season.”

Still, it is thought Tottenham are now exploring the possibility of completing a move for Gallagher in the summer. Spurs boss, Ange Postecoglou, is known to be “very keen” on acquiring the England international.

With Gallagher’s Chelsea future “up in the air,” and the potential of a major cash injection for Chelsea if the sale does go ahead, it is believed there is still a chance for Gallagher to make that switch across London.

This will be such a difficult deal to pull off. As much as Chelsea may need to sell their assets, the idea of losing Gallagher to Spurs of all clubs would be a bitter one to take for the fanbase, and that will only drive up the price.
