Report: Spurs have expressed interest in signing on-loan star in permanent deal

Sport have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have expressed an interest in signing Clement Lenglet permanently in the summer.

Lenglet joined Spurs on a season-long loan deal from Barcelona last summer but the loan does not have a purchase option, which means that any permanent transfer will have to be negotiated by the North London club.

The Frenchman has largely been solid but unspectacular, being rotated with Ben Davies in the left centre-back role and even being used in the middle of a back three on occasion by Antonio Conte.

Sport now state that Lenglet knows he has no future at the Camp Nou and that Barca will look to sell him in the summer.

The publication adds that despite not having a purchase option, Tottenham are ‘willing to make an offer’ for the Frenchman in the summer due to a shortage of decent left-footed centre-backs on the market.

Sport adds that Barcelona will ‘not cause problems’ in the negotiations as long as they do not make a big loss on the 27-year-old.

If Conte does commit to a new contract (which is a big ‘if’), then I have no doubts that Tottenham will enter the market for a top left-sided centre-back next summer such as Bastoni or Hincapie.

That will likely mean that just one of Davies or Lenglet will be at the club next season.

While the Welshman is the more consistent defender of the two, the Frenchman offers more versatility as he can also operate in the middle.
