Report: Spurs sacking was ‘the biggest heartbreak’ of Pochettino’s life

Ahead of Mauricio Pochettino’s return to Tottenham as Chelsea boss on Monday, The Daily Mail have now reported on the circumstances behind his exit from the North London club, revealing that the Argentine was devastated at his sacking

The report explains that while Pochettino was adored by those at Spurs, there was ‘an unmistakable view’ that the time had come to part ways with him during his final few months at the club.

This was because the former Tottenham manager had become ‘distant, grumpy and increasingly high-maintenance’, with some feeling that he was almost ‘unrecognisable’.

However, despite the writing appearing to be on the wall at the time, Pochettino was allegedly deeply upset by his sacking, which caught him by surprise.

The 51-year-old is thought to have believed that he could still turn things around at the time and it is explained that the speed of the sacking left him particularly distraught as he did not get a chance to say a proper farewell to his players.

One source told The Mail about the divorce: “I think that’s the biggest heartbreak of his life. I don’t think anyone should underestimate how hurt he was by that sacking and how long it took him to recover from it.”

The report adds that while Pochettino did not return to Hotspur Way for a few months after his sacking since the emotions remained raw, he and Daniel Levy have since managed to work through their differences.

With hindsight, we can say for sure that Levy and the Tottenham hierarchy made the wrong choices to hire the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, who were not good fits for Spurs.

However, I do think that they were left with no choice but to sack Pochettino back in 2019 as the Argentine seemed to have a chip on his shoulder and appeared to have lost the dressing room.
