Report: Spurs set to receive bill in the region of £15million

All Premier League clubs including Tottenham Hotspur are set to take a massive financial hit, according to a report by Football.London.

Footballing action in England has been suspended since the beginning of March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Clubs have already lost out on a considerable amount of matchday revenue with no matches played for more than two months.

It has been reported that Tottenham will be one of the worst-hit clubs in the Premier League if games are played behind closed doors this season as well as next season, with the club potentially losing out on over £100 million (Football Insider).

The Lilywhites could now be set to suffer another financial blow after Football.London revealed that top-flight clubs will have to pay back some of the broadcasting revenue they received at the start of the season from broadcasters including Sky and BT.

As a result of lost revenue for the TV companies, all clubs including Tottenham could be asked to pay back around £15million as claimed by former champions Manchester United.

United’s financial results stated that “broadcasting revenue for the quarter was £26.0 million, a decrease of £27.8 million, or 51.7%, over the prior year quarter, primarily due to an estimated £15.0m Premier League rebate due to broadcasters, following delay and broadcast schedule changes to the 2019/20 football season, non-participation in the UEFA Champions League, and the impact of playing two fewer Premier League away games”.

With matchday, broadcast and commercial revenue streams all being stopped abruptly due to the Premier League’s suspension, all clubs are in an extremely difficult position at the moment. What makes Spurs’ situation especially precarious is the huge debt we owe on the stadium. This is why clubs are doing everything they possibly can to ensure that the season is completed.
