Report: Tottenham are still in ‘pole position’ to sign defender despite talk of new contract

The saga involving Radu Dragusin’s future continues to evolve, with Italian news outlet CalcioMercato claiming that Tottenham Hotspur are still in ‘pole position’ to sign the centre-half. However, the offer of a new contract with Genoa could complicate matters.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Tottenham were making the signing of a new centre-back their utmost priority in the January transfer window, and that same report from the Telegraph highlighted Radu Dragusin as a key target.

However, just hours later, Fabrizio Romano took to Twitter to reveal that Dragusin was in line for a new bumper contract with his current club, Genoa, with the Serie A side’s director confirming the situation.

That would have likely been the end of the matter, or at least it would be once that new deal is confirmed officially. Ange Postecoglou has made no secret of his desire to sign a defender as soon as possible to ease his injury issues (Football.London).

Is Radu Dragusin a realistic transfer target for Spurs?

The latest on Dragusin’s scenario comes from CalcioMercato, who appear to suggest the race is not over just yet.

The report states Spurs are in “pole position” to acquire the 21-year-old centre-half during the January transfer window.

While Genoa want to keep hold of the player until at least the end of the season, it is believed that if Spurs could “present the right offer” they may be able to force the Italian outfit into a sale next month.

Meanwhile, Gianluca Di Marzio add that Atalanta are also interested in Dragusin and would be ready to start the bidding at €20m (£17.3m), but Genoa are looking for a starting price of €30m (£25.9m).

Spurs Web Opinion

This whole situation feels a little bit farcical, and I think we’d be better to steer clear of it all. If the reports are true and we are opening talks over a potential deal for Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, that would be our defensive needs sorted out anyway.
