Report: Tottenham have informed La Liga club they want to sign defender

Mundo Deportivo have reported that Tottenham have informed Barcelona that they want to sign Clement Lenglet this summer as they have been impressed by him on and off the pitch.

Sport recently revealed that Barcelona director Mateu Alemany wants to close Clement Lenglet’s sale to Tottenham before leaving Camp Nou this summer.

After two years at the Catalan giants, Alemany looks set to leave the club this summer, with reports indicating that Aston Villa are in the process of  ‘finalising’ the Spaniard as their next director of football (The Athletic).

Alemany is reportedly in London at the moment, but it is up to Spurs to convince Lenglet to join, before making a suitable offer to Barcelona.

Sport explained that he has several items on the agenda before leaving the club, including cashing in on some players to offset losses and free up space on the wage bill for new signings.

The report states that selling Lenglet to Tottenham ‘could be one of the first operations’ of the summer, with Alemany expected to push through the deal soon.

This is because Spurs are determined to hold on to the Frenchman and are willing to pay ‘a reasonable price’ for him.

This report comes on the back of another update by Sport last week, which revealed that Barcelona expect to make around €15m (£13m) from the centre-back’s sale.

Curiously, it is only the Spanish press (and Sport in particular) who have been talking up the possibility of Lenglet joining Tottenham, with not a lot of British outlets indicating that such a deal is on the cards.

One would not expect Spurs to make a decision on the centre-back until they have a new head coach in place.
