Report: Tottenham set to miss out to Chelsea in £40million transfer deal

Chelsea are reported to be closing in on a £40million deal to bring Brighton defender Lewis Dunk to Stamford Bridge.

The Sun claim that Tottenham also hold an interest in the 28-year-old, but it is Chelsea who are frontrunners.

Dunk is known to be a self-confessed Chelsea fan and even named his pet dog, Didier in honour of the former Blues forward Didier Drogba (Chelsea official).

Tottenham lost the services of Jan Vertonghen last month following the expiration of his contract, with the Belgian completing a move to Benfica on Friday and it remains to be seen whether they will look to replace him ahead of the new campaign.

Should Chelsea match the Seagulls’ valuation, it is expected they will bring Ben White, who impressed on loan at Leeds last season into the starting eleven to replace the England international.

Given Dunk’s history as a huge Chelsea fan, it appears that it will be a formality that he makes the move to Stamford Bridge.

At 28, £40million is a substantial amount of money in today’s financial climate and would give Daniel Levy little opportunity to be able to recoup the transfer fee in the future.
