Ruud Van Nistelrooy has claimed that he rejected a return to the Premiership to fight for his place at Real Madrid.

The Dutch striker was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, but has decided to remain with the Spanish giants.

He said: “The easiest thing for me to have done would have been to leave for a lesser team.

“But I’m not going to leave Madrid. I want to know what I’m capable of. There are still a lot of options when it comes to playing.”

“I know I can play at the highest level,” he said. “Physically, I feel better than before the injury.

“I only need to find my rhythm and that will come with matches. The doctor who operated on me said I could play for three more years.

“And when I retire from football I won’t have any problems. Before the injury I didn’t feel good. I lost three years.”

  1. Silly boy Ruud,

Playing for a “lesser” team, Ha! Ha!……better than not playing at all. You know your nearly over the hill and what I see is a least FIVE players at Madrid in front of you…..silly boy.

  2. Not being funny, but what was going to do at Tottenham? He’s not exactly going to walk into that team, is he.

Cover for Pav if he went to Spartak?

I guess any team is lesser after Madrid. But he’s not exactly first choice there, is he.

  3. what annoys me is the press reaction, saying he was calling spurs a lesser team.

we all also knew of fat sam’s interest, but the press seem to have conveniently forgotten. i’m sure his ‘lesser teams’ comment was more to do with him being offered contracts from blackburn, similar prem teams (probably hull) and a host of middle eastern teams with fat wallets.
