Sporting director rules out rumoured Spurs target leaving in January

Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl has insisted that Denis Zakaria will not leave the club during the upcoming January transfer window and confirmed there is no transfer release clause in the player’s contract (Sportbuzzer).

Tottenham Hotspur have previously been credited with an interest in the 22-year-old Swiss international along with Inter Milan and Manchester United (Sport Bild).

The defensive midfielder has impressed in the Bundesliga following his switch from Swiss side Young Boys in 2017.

Zakaria is under contract at Monchengladbach and are said to value the player at £42.7m.

Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama both played the holding midfield role superbly a few seasons ago while at White Hart Lane, but have fallen down the pecking order in recent times with the pair having suffered their fair share of injuries.

Eberl told Sportbuzzer when asked about how long they can continue to resist offers for the midfielder: “First of all, we have everything in hand, because there is no clause. I can definitely rule out a winter transfer. But we’ve always realised that, especially when we’re successful, we have a huge perception of what our players are doing.

“Again we have an extremely exciting, young squad. I always remember a fan who said to me years ago: Please Max, look, we’ll make it to Europe, then everyone will stay. Already at that time I thought: Unfortunately, nothing is wrong.”

Opinion

Spurs fans who may have watched the recent international between Switzerland and Denmark would have seen that Zakaria kept a tight leash on Christian Eriksen and hardly gave the Spurs player a kick.
