Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Rodrigo Bentancur has been ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
While the 4-1 thrashing Spurs received at the hands of Leicester City on Saturday dented the club’s hopes of finishing in the top four, losing Bentancur due to injury arguably came as a bigger blow.
The midfielder, who has been one of the Lilywhites’ most consistent performers since arriving from Juventus in January of last year, looked to be agonising pain after his knee collided with that of Nampalys Mendy when he went in for a tackle just after the hour mark.
The 25-year-old was forced off and TNT Sports Argentina reported on Sunday that he faced a lengthy spell on the sidelines as he had torn his cruciate ligaments.
Spurs have now confirmed that Bentancur has ruptured his ACL and will have to undergo surgery.

Bentancur is arguably our second most important player after Harry Kane as he makes the 3-4-3 system tick. We have struggled to progress the ball to the attacking third when the Uruguayan has not featured, which is why this news comes as a massive blow to our hopes of finishing in the top four and making it to the latter stages of the Champions League.
