Spurs favourites for fourth says pundit Phil Thompson

Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson has made Tottenham favourites to finish fourth in the Premier League.

The former Liverpool player watched Spurs beat Portsmouth 2-0 on Saturday and believes that Spurs are in pole position for the final Champions League place.

“They won this at a canter. They were 2-0 up at half-time, hit the post, hit the bar and had a few other efforts,” Thompson told Soccer Saturday.

“They will be tough to catch, looking at them and the way they played. You look around the side and they have quality and players that can make things happen.

“(Niko) Kranjcar got the second goal, just flicking it past his man, (Luka) Modric has settled into a central-midfield position, there’s real quality there. (Peter) Crouch scored today and broke his long-time duck, (Eidur) Gudjohnsen looks decent and I don’t think (Jermain) Defoe or (Aaron) Lennon will be too far away. It’s looking good for them.”

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Liverpool or Spurs???????????
I have believed for many weeks that Liverpool will get the 4th spot in the Prem. But as time goes by my confidence that Spurs are able to hang on to 4th is getting stronger. Having today looked at the fixtures coming up for April I see that Liverpool have to play 7 or 9 matches between April 1st and May 1st. That begs the Question…….. If Rafa is leaving after the season ends, What would be more important to him 4th in the prem or to win the Europa league? Winning the europa league might mean too many games in April and could cost Liverpool 4th spot. Do Liverpool at this stage of the season have the squad to play 9 games in 31 days?
    I don't think so.

  2. Once a red, always a red and I think big nose Phil is trying to take a little heat off his beloved Liverpool whose run in is very soft compared to the other teams vying for fourth spot.

With our tough run in I think we need to pull at least one rabbit out of the hat against either the scum, Chelski or Utd to stand even a chance. I think it could be any of us, Liverpool (only tough game is Chelski) or Man City (especially if they take points off of us). That said, both Liverpool and City are more than capable of going missing and dropping points (and of course, Liverpool have played more games).

It could be any of us – but I'm more than happy for the media to favour one of the other teams and take the pressure off of us. Much like the big nosed scouse is doing for Liverpool!
