Spurs players release statement and make financial gesture for those who went to Newcastle

The Tottenham Hotspur squad have released a statement through the club’s official Twitter channel to apologise to the supporters who made the trip to Newcastle United at the weekend and have offered to reimburse the cost of their match day ticket.

Many Spurs fans who had made the long journey north were flocking to the exits at St James’ Park after their side conceded five goals inside the opening twenty minutes to end any chance of a late push for a Champions League place.

Interim head coach Cristian Stellini labelled the performance as the worst 25 minutes of football he had arguably seen (Guardian) and yesterday became the latest person to fall on Daniel Levy’s axe with Ryan Mason put in charge for the last six matches.

The lack of desire and effort from the Tottenham players angered the supporters and the squad have now offered a financial gesture along with an apology for the performance witnessed.

The statement read: “As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger. It wasn’t good enough. We know words aren’t enough in situations like this but believe us, a defeat like this hurts.

“We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match day tickets from St James’ Park.

“We know this dos not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us.

“Together – and only together – can we move things forward.”
