Striker could miss the Carabao Cup clash between Chelsea and Spurs

Chelsea face a race against time to complete a loan deal for Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain if the 31-year-old, currently on loan at AC Milan, is to make his debut against Tottenham on Thursday in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Higuain must be registered as a Chelsea player by midday on Wednesday in order to be included in their squad for the tie.

The Argentinian will be reunited with Maurizio Sarri, a manager he thrived under at Napoli where he scored 36 goals in 35 Serie A matches.

Tottenham take a 1-0 lead into the second leg at Stamford Bridge after Harry Kane’s penalty at Wembley gave Mauricio Pochettino’s side a slight advantage.

Spurs fans will be hopeful that Higuain does not complete his switch in time having previously been unbeaten in three games against Tottenham, having won twice and drawn once, with three goals and an assist to his name.

Last season, he helped Juventus eliminate Tottenham in last season’s Champions League round of 16 – with three goals over the two legs.
