Tennis star Nick Kyrgios names the player who convinced him to support Tottenham

Tennis star Nick Kyrgios has revealed why he is a Tottenham Hotspur fan, and it’s all down to computer games and none other than Emmanuel Adebayor.

Not one to play by the rules, Kyrgios has often been seen wearing the white of Tottenham during tennis tournaments in lieu of the standard, more formal tennis attire.

Ranked number 33 on the ATP, Kyrgios will likely be pleased to see his fellow Australian, Ange Postecoglou, taking over at the North London club.

The 57-year-old is going to need his squad to display the kind of fighting spirit and wily determination Kyrgios is famed for if they are to succeed this season and put the disappointment of last season’s eighth-placed finish behind them.

Kyrgios is a Spurs fan because of Adebayor

Having been out with injury all year, Kyrgios is now looking to bounce back at Wimbledon. He took some time out of preparation to chat with Men’s Health, and the topic of Tottenham came up.

When asked about his affiliation with Spurs, Kyrgios said: “It’s a funny story, you’ll like this. I play computer games a lot and I used to like Emmanuel Adebayor on FIFA. At the time, he played for Spurs, so I supported them and have never changed.”

Adebayor spent the 2011/12 season on loan at Tottenham from Manchester City, before joining the Lilywhites permanently the following summer. The former Arsenal man scored 42 goals and provided 20 assists in 113 games for Spurs (Transfermarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s easy to see why Nick Kyrgios was drawn to Emmanuel Adebayor back in the day, as they are both pretty outrageous characters who enjoy winding people up.

I wonder if supporting Spurs causes Kyrgios as much stress as it does the rest of us. I’m actually impressed he’s stuck with the team all these years.
