The top five Tottenham signings who never realised their potential

This summer, Tottenham became the first Premier League club ever to fail to make a single new signing in the transfer window.

However, this may be a blessing in disguise, because, as football fans know, not every big money buy fulfils his true potentials.

We take a look at five Tottenham signings who never realised their full potential in a white shirt in recent years.

Roberto Soldado

The curse of the Tottenham striker plagued this prolific Spanish striker through his years at White Hart Lane.

63 goals in 120 games for Real Madrid B. Two seasons in Real Madrid’s first team. 33 goals in 66 games for Getafe. 81 goals in 141 games for Valencia. Then the curse cut Soldado down in his prime.

I still argue that Tottenham haven’t actually signed a class new forward since Dimitar Berbatov, with the re-signing exceptions of Defoe and Keane.

Roberto Soldado overtook Paulinho as the Tottenham record signing in 2013, a big money signing for a fee of £23m, a large chunk of the Gareth Bale money.

The class striker somehow went from a goal every two games to 7 goals in 52 League games for Tottenham, as Soldado’s career never really took off in London.

Despite this, he always seemed to remain a fan favourite, as if the Tottenham faithful were just willing him to find the net for his own sorry sake.

Soldado was eventually sold for £10m to Villarreal, and now plays his games for Fenerbahçe, where he failed to score in his first ten games. Some things don’t change then.
