‘Tottenham are a top team’ – Former Ukraine star comments on Zabarnyi rumours

Former Ukraine international Vyacheslav Shevchuk thinks Dynamo Kyiv could sell Illya Zabarnyi to Tottenham Hotspur this summer if the price is right.

According to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, Antonio Conte could look to bring in two centre-backs to Tottenham this summer, with Zabarnyi being one of the names on the Italian’s wishlist.

The teenager has shown maturity beyond his years with his performances over the last couple of years, not only becoming a mainstay in Dynamo’s backline but also establishing himself as a regular in the Ukrainian national side.

When asked about Tottenham’s rumoured interest in Zabarnyi, Dynamo’s assistant manager Emil Caras was dismissive of the speculation last week but he did add that the 19-year-old was attracting interest this summer (Sport Analytic).

Shevchuk has now labelled Spurs a ‘top club’ and stated that he can see Dynamo selling Zabarnyi to the North Londoners this summer if a suitable offer comes their way.

He told Sport Analytic: “Zabarnyi, at 19, is showing a very mature game. If there is an offer that suits Dynamo, why not? Tottenham are a top team.

“And Dynamo already has a readymade replacement – young (Maksym) Dyachuk.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Despite Zabarnyi’s potential, I do not think the 19-year-old is likely to be Tottenham’s main centre-back target this summer.

Perhaps Conte and Paratici view the teenager as one for the future, and an option to take Rodon’s or Sanchez’s place in the squad.

So, Tottenham’s pursuit of the Ukrainian is likely to be independent of their pursuit of a first-choice left-sided centre-back.
