Tottenham man admits he wants to become a ‘great coach’ one day

Yaya Toure has said that he is learning a lot from working at the Tottenham academy and admitted that he harbours ambitions of managing at the highest level.

Toure is widely seen as one of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history, having won three league titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup during his time with Man City.

The 39-year-old, who hung up his boots in 2020, joined the Hotspur Way set-up last season and worked within the Tottenham academy while he collected his necessary coaching badges.

He subsequently stayed with the North London outfit for the new campaign, taking on the role of Under-16s head coach.

The Man City legend has already had offers to become a manager, most recently one from Wigan Athletic back in November of last year (Mike Minay), which he turned down in favour of remaining at Hotspur Way.

Toure has admitted that he is enjoying working with the players and the coaches in the Spurs academy.

When asked to describe his life as a coach, he told Marca: “Very good. It’s different from when I was at Barca, but now it’s a new career and I love it. I am progressing little by little.

“I work in the Tottenham youth academy. I’m happy to be here. The people who are by my side help me a lot. I have a desire to become a great coach!”

When asked about his coaching philosophy, Toure responded: “I think I have a different profile.

“I love the Spanish game, its philosophy, but also the intensity of English football. Being able to handle and merge both is perfect for me.

“I have been lucky enough to be able to compete in both countries and my idea is to try to mix the two styles. The challenge is to have intensity and speed while having good ball handling.”

Toure has never really hidden his desire to take the top job one day and he might just be waiting for an opportunity that he feels is the right one.

However, up until he remains at Spurs, there is no doubt that the young players in the academy will continue to benefit vastly from his experience.
