Unfamiliar face lines up for Tottenham in first taste of pre-season action

Tottenham Hotspur were back in action yesterday when the club’s Under-23 side played the first pre-season match of the season.

Wayne Burnett’s side were in action against Ebbsfleet United at the National League side’s Kufflink Stadium.

A number of familiar faces from the side were missing including Alfie Whiteman, Japhet Tanganga, TJ Eyoma, George Marsh, Jamie Bowden, Jack Roles, Brandon Austin and Troy Parrott.

With goalkeepers Whiteman and Austin both missing and potentially being saved to be part of Mauricio Pochettino’s first team tour of the far east which starts this week, there was a place in the Under-23 side for a traillist.

There was an unfamiliar face in between the sticks when Burnett gave former Southend United goalkeeper Ted Smith a chance to play.

The 23-year-old was released by the Shrimpers at the end of last season after finding himself down in the goalkeeping pecking order (Southend United) but had made 26 league appeances for the club (Wikipedia).

The 6 ft 1 in shotstopper has been training with Spurs over the past week and it remains to be seen if he will be offered a deal to remain in North London.
