Video: Former Spur suffers horrific on-field injury which required surgery

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani dos Santos has suffered a sickening injury whilst playing for Club America.

The 30-year-old was on the books of Spurs between 2008 and 2012 but failed to make an impact and hold down a regular first team place in North London.

He returned to his homeland this summer when he linked up with the Liga MX outfit after spending two seasons in the MLS with LA Galaxy (Goal).

The injury happened when Dos Santos went to challenge for the ball in the 37th minute of the game against Guadalajara with the opposition player Bresino raising his studs high, making contact with the thigh of the Mexican international.

He was left in agony on the floor as blood poured out from a leg wound which saw players from both sides desperately signalling for medical assistance.

He received treatment on the field with the wound being covered with a bandage and had to undergo surgery in hospital.

Dos Santos took to Twitter to thank fans for their support whilst also promising to come back stronger. He is expected to be sidelined for six weeks (Goal).
