Gallery: Five Tottenham transfer window signings that flopped

If Tottenham Hotspur are to complete the signings of Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessengnon, then this summer transfer window should be labelled as a success.

Spurs fans were greeted with two signings in one week with Tanguy Ndombele’s deal being finalised shortly after Jack Clarke in early July. This came after supporters waited over 500 days for the club to make a first-team signing.

Spurs have made some excellent signings in recent years, such as the arrivals of Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen, Dele Alli…the list goes on.

However, the transfer window hasn’t always been plain sailing for the Club. There have been a number of players enter the doors at White Hart Lane who have not lived up to their potential and failed to justify their price tag that the Club purchased them for.

We list five of these players (unranked) who can be considered to be some of the worst signings Spurs have made in the Premier League era.

David Bentley

For £15million (Guardian), Tottenham only managed to get 62 matches out of David Bentley. The now-34-year-old midfielder joined Spurs from Blackburn prior to the 2008/09 season.

To make matters worse, it is believed that a portion of the transfer fee was paid to North London rivals Arsenal since Bentley played for them before Blackburn.

His value would continue to decline after his transfer to White Hart Lane. He was sent out on loan four times to Birmingham, West Ham, Rostov, and his former club Blackburn.

He struggled to find his place in the first eleven and never properly clicked at Spurs. In 2014 at the age of just 29, Bentley retired from football entirely. He stated that he had fell out of love with the game due to the impact of social media and money (Guardian).
