Spurs half time ratings vs Newcastle – Shocking defending proves costly

Here’s how we rated the Spurs players following the opening forty-five minutes of action in this afternoon’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Ange Postecoglou’s side head into the break currently 2-0 down after the Magpies scored twice in quick succession.

Guglielmo Vicario: Nearly cost his side a third goal with a loose pass. 5.

Pedro Porro: Tracked back well to deny Barnes a shot on goal inside the first ten minutes. Guilty for the second goal with a crazy pass. 3.

Cristian Romero: Made an important block from a Barnes cross early on but his positioning at times is leaving too much space in behind for the Newcastle forwards. 4.

Micky van de Ven: Played Isak onside and was then turned inside out by the striker for the opening goal and similar for the second. Harshly booked. 3.

Destiny Udogie: Easily muscled off the ball by Gordon in the build-up to the first goal. 3.

Rodrigo Bentancur: Recalled to the starting XI in place of Sarr. 4.

Yves Bissouma: Operating in the number six role but it clearly isn’t his strength. Defended well to deny Newcastle a potential third just before the half. 4.

James Maddison: Started the game brightly but with Newcastle’s quick double, he faded away. 5.

Timo Werner: Still looks short of confidence in front of goal which was evident early on when Johnson crossed into the box and he skied it over the bar instead of heading it. Failed to hit the target with Maddison’s cut-back. 4.

Brennan Johnson: Crossed well for Werner’s early chance but has seen little of the ball. 4.

Heung-min Son: Played a nice ball with the outside of his foot early on, but that was about all. 4.
