McLeish: I’d have signed Pavlyuchenko for the right price

Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish admits that he would have signed Roman Pavlyuchenko if the price was right.

The Spurs striker was linked with a move to St Andrews during the January transfer window, while he was still out of favour at White Hart Lane but the Blues could not meet Tottenham’s valuation.

“I still believe that I was correct not to go ballistic in January, in terms of a huge transfer,” McLeish told the Birmingham Mail.

“Although if we could have, I would have done Pavlyuchenko.

“But the figures became a bit rich and the club felt that as well.

“It’s not that we didn’t want to spend our money, but we all had the same opinion on that one. I think I was proven correct as we finished ninth.

“If we had brought in a big name, there might have been expectation for us to finish in Europe or something like that.

“That would have heaped more pressure on the players, and I didn’t think they needed that pressure.”
