Player Ratings vs Manchester United

Gomes (7) – Could’ve read a copy of his favourite lad mag undisturbed for most of the game. Little chance with Gibson’s strikes.
Hutton (4) – The heart sinks when his name’s on the team sheet. I think we’ve seen the best of him and it’s not good enough.
Bale (7) – A very positive & direct performance. Should cover well for Assou-Ekotto in the coming weeks and months. Exempt from the general criticism.
Bassong (7) – Also one of the better displays.
Dawson (6) – A typical Dawson effort, distribution as ever lets him down.
Lennon (5) – Out of position and starved of the ball. Generally anonymous
Palacios (5) – The odd good tackle as usual but a liability when given the ball. Caught in possession several times.
Jenas (5) – I’m a Jenas fan but this was very poor.
Bentley (4) – It breaks your heart that he tries so hard to do well and can’t do it but his free kicks and corners said it all. When Bale curled in a free kick near the end that didn’t hit the first man or go straight into touch it seemed like a revelation. He looked so slow as well.
Keane (4) – Shocking first touch meant he never influenced the play or got the chance to link with Defoe effectively.
Defoe (5) – One more than Robbie as he did have a couple of shots. Should’ve scored to make it 1-1 though.
Redknapp (3) – Inappropriate team selection and tactics. No effort to change things that weren’t working until too late.

As for Bentley, I think his first half looked better.
I think the loss gets blamed on the first half’s midfield defending. Where or where were the tackles around the box?!?
Hutton (3) – Poor, poor, can’t say anything else
Bale (7) – Super, running and taking of players, and making chances
Bassong (6) – Good defender, but couldn’t show it all today
Dawson (6) – Also a good defender, but can play better
Lennon (6) – Running, and running and running, but not on his best
Palacios (5) – Couldn’t show his quality
Jenas (5) – Trying to play, and it is good, but not showing much
Bentley (4) – Trying to do much but fails
Keane (4) – Not showing much, a bit annonymus
Defoe (6) – Some good chances, but couldn’t score the goal
Redknapp (3) – Poor tactic
Bale’s misdirected pass lost possession and allowed an MU break which led to 0-1.
A Keane error which lost possession led to the build up for 0-2.
That Spurs team performance was a slur on the great name of Tottenham Hotspur. Almost every pass was telegraphed! Possession was not contested. HR has to manage effectively and his failure to replace Bentley and Keane was unbelieveable.
An slightly improved performance by Bale. Whats happened to Palacious???
They are a great chance to reach wembley. I went the previous two seasons and they were both great days out. Why disrespect the cups by playing an understrenghth team?
And how would it benifit the young players anyway? Play one game and get knocked out?
We should have gone all out for it and played a full strength team. We if we win the carling cup we are in europe in March and that can release some of the pressure.
