Journalist describes Tottenham Hotspur target as ‘very special’ player

In a new installment of the Talking Transfers Podcast, journalist Graeme Bailey has revealed scouts have informed him that Sporting Lisbon wing-back Pedro Porro could be a very special player amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Porro is enjoying a fantastic season over in Portugal, with two goals and ten assists to his name in 23 appearances this term (Transfermarkt). The 23-year-old was particularly impressive in the Champions League, where he excelled against Tottenham during the group stages.

Spurs have long held an interest in acquiring Porro to solve the right wing-back problem in Antonio Conte’s squad, but negotiations have progressed slowly with Sporting insistent that only an offer meeting Porro’s release clause of £40 million would be acceptable (Guardian).

It is believed that Spurs are willing to pay that amount, but would prefer to spread the fee over installments rather than an upfront payment (90 Min). According to Record, Spurs have made an initial offer of £29.7 million with potential add-ons amounting to £9.6 million.

With negotiations ongoing, Bailey attempted to shed some light on the situation and highlighted just how good Porro could be for Spurs should they sign him.

He said: “They want to do it. He is their top right-back target. Porro is the one they want. He has a release clause. Spurs won’t pay the full release clause that Sporting are insisting, but we’ve learned that there are some within Sporting who are willing to take instalments.”

“Amorim is very powerful there and he’s determined to keep the player until the summer, so it looks difficult to get him out. I’ve not seen a lot of him, but I’ve spoken to scouts who think he could be very special, they like him a lot, so it’s clear to see why they want him,” Bailey added.

Spurs Web Opinion

I cannot wait for this saga to be over, one way or another. I can’t understand why a club with the apparent financial might of Tottenham Hotspur can’t, or won’t, just pay the fee Sporting Lisbon want and get the top target wrapped up before the end of the transfer window. Porro is a great player who would improve our team immediately, and everyone appears to see that apart from those in charge of the money.
