Report: Sponsorship deal could reach ‘another level’ for Spurs after Harry Kane news

According to finance expert Dr Dan Plumley via Football Insider, the sponsorship deal between Tottenham and AIA could become even more lucrative, and there are plans for Harry Kane to become a brand ambassador for the insurance company.

AIA has been the main shirt sponsor of Tottenham Hotspur since 2015 and the club announced an extension to their deal in 2019, which would run through to 2027. That deal is believed to be worth around £320 million.

The sponsorship deal was brought into question late last year, after AIA were found to be in support of controversial national security laws in Hong Kong (The Times). The controversy saw British political groups condemn the company for its disregard for human rights issues.

Tottenham Hotspur were urged to sever all ties with AIA, but that hasn’t happened. According to a previous report from Football Insider, the implications of terminating the agreement early would have cost Spurs a great deal of money and legal issues.

Now, it appears the club and AIA are doubling down, with Kane’s role as a brand ambassador set to strengthen the relationship between the two organisations.

Plumley said: “It’s a really good sign for both parties. It shows that AIA are happy with the relationship with Spurs and want to push that to another level.”

Kane joins Heung-min Son as a brand ambassador for AIA, to which Plumley added: “Kane and Son are Tottenham’s two biggest players, and it’s great for Spurs that their stars are able to solidify that partnership by being an ambassador for the brand.

“For everyone involved it’s a sign that the deal is going according to plan. They’ve been partners now for nearly a decade which again suggests the relationship is very strong.”

From a business point of view this all makes perfect sense, getting our star player to sweeten the relationship with the sponsor. I’m a little unsure about the whole human rights side of things and why Kane is happy to attach himself to that, but that’s something that only those involved with the deal would really understand.
